A NEW EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE
Launching Universal Light
By Amy Sala Tenna
Universal Light was the result of an appetite from the industry for new knowledge around lighting and its role in the future built environment. With Australia's leading designers, consultants and lighting experts coming together to help share their experiences and perspectives, the result was monumental for Unios.
With a conscious effort to further educate the importance of light and the critical role it plays in our daily lives, the inaugural edition of Universal Light came to life in September, 2018.

The reason - Unios had a vision to bring together leading designers, consultants and lighting experts who would cover a range of different themes and shed new light on trends and technologies for our audience. In an industry filled with so much education and knowledge; Universal Light was the platform we could use to share these insights. With this publication, came the opportunity to position ourselves as not only an architectural lighting manufacturer but also as an educational resource. From this, we set out to acquire, teach and share knowledge surrounding light, in all its diversity.
With a conscious effort to further educate the importance of light and the critical role it plays in our daily lives, the inaugural edition of Universal Light came to life in September, 2018.
The inspiration - As a reflection on the changing nature of the industry, our inspiration came from light itself. We quickly realised that over time, the way we work and live changes as does our expectations from light. How could we share this message and feed the appetite for new knowledge that centred around lighting and its role in the future built environment? The publication of Universal Light was our answer and meant that readers could be enlighted by each contribution, which represented a unique part of this diverse industry. With our guiding principle of "universal light" set in motion for the year, the publication solidified our commitment to this mantra.

The motivation - With a desire to seek out a range of perspectives, the first edition looked into the design and application of light in various sectors. Each contributor shared invaluable knowledge from their personal experiences which radiated throughout the first publication. Unios were thrilled to bring these unique perspectives to life and will continue to seek new and insightful knowledge for our readers.
The conversations - Contributions from Universal Light varied, with a significant focus on technology, sustainability and design. Articles ranged from the dark skies movement to a more responsive form of lighting that mimicked the circadian cycle, to the design intent for the most talked about hotel design of 2017. The common thread for each article was light – the specification of it, the design of it and the application of it.

The result - A lot of hard work went into this inaugural edition from the brand team (about six months to be precise). What started as a simple task has grown into so much more; Universal Light is now our passion. The strength in Universal Light is that its conversations not only apply to those in the industry, its concepts also reshape our society and the way we understand light - meaning a mixture of people took an interest in the publication.

Universal Light will be printed and distributed biannually and will aim to not only be an inspirational resource for the lighting curious but a beacon for excellent design. On our position as an educational resource, this is just the beginning for Unios. We can't wait to share new knowledge and a range of perspectives surrounding light with you in the future. Keep an eye out for our second edition in March 2019!
