UNIOS TOOLBOX
The new way to specify lighting
By Henry Luong
The question was asked on how to streamline the lighting specification process - what resulted from this was nine long months of planning, designing, finessing and building the Unios Toolbox. We applied the guiding principle of "universal light" to the platform, and further positioned ourselves as a resource; one that could simplify and synchronise the lighting specification process for architects, engineers and consultants.
The reason - With the sole intention of creating the Toolbox to benefit our clients; it would provide a universal platform for configuring, bookmarking, specifying and collaborating on luminaires for all projects across the nation. We wanted to create a streamlined platform which would improve the lighting specification process and minimise incomplete or inaccurate data.
The result of the Toolbox was a synchronised and simplified solution to the lighting specification process and allowed Unios to further position itself as a resource, enhancing the lighting community.
The motivation - Research revealed that 94% of specifiers felt negatively towards the disruptiveness of the lighting specification process. It also stated that 5 out of 10 specifiers had difficulty with product substitution, 4 out of 10 could not specify accordingly because of incomplete data and 7 out of 10 believed the future of specification would be more collaborative. We had the facts; we knew the insight, we just needed the tool.

The conversations - We focussed on four principal fields that would entirely influence the specification process and be paramount to the success of the Unios Toolbox; these were configuring, bookmarking, exporting and collaborating.
Our configurator would build users perfect product, allowing them to create purpose-built luminaires fit for projects of all shapes and sizes. We then introduced bookmarking, which meant users could find their frequently specified luminaire configurations at the click of a button. Next, the Unios Toolbox saw a streamline in workflow for specification and scheduling, as each project could export as both XLS and PDF files. Lastly, and perhaps the hero concept of the Unios Toolbox was the collaborative nature of the platform. Internal and external contributors could now assist with projects and build luminaire schedules collaboratively, saving on time and ensuring coordinated decisions would be made on all technical aspects of a specification.

The result - We are confident in the outcome of the Unios Toolbox, with many stakeholders utilising the platform daily. The result of the Toolbox was a synchronised and simplified solution to the lighting specification process and allowed Unios to further position itself as a resource, enhancing the lighting community.
